Our Story
Our story begins with our older chef Shawky, who has been working as a food preparer his whole life in Italy, also having the opportunity to work as Pavarotti's personal chef in 1991.

In 2015, Shawky left Bologna to pursue his dream of opening a restaurant in England. That's when he met Matteo, a young Italian chef from Veneto, who had previously studied in Italy with the great masters Gabriele Bonci and Gianluca Fonsato and at the moment was working in the most renowned and finest restaurants in Birmingham.
Matteo and Shawky have been friends since.

After 7 years of running his business in downtown Birmingham, Shawky sold it, and now both friends share the dream of having their own place to delight people with Italian cuisine, its authenticity and its genuineness.

In 2023, together, Matteo and Shawky decided to partner up and create Pane&Vino, a place which combines "old school" cooking methods with the new ones, merging their knowledge and experiences to create a restaurant that truly reflects the tastes of their beloved country.
The beginning of a new story,
which we hope you'll be part of.

"Erdington has been blessed with this hidden gem! What a fabulous little restaurant, friendly staff and very passionate chefs! We enjoyed our meal so much and as a huge foodie, I can say without a doubt it is better than Italians I have dined at in the city centre. We all can’t stop talking about how good the food was, freshly made, beautifully presented and the value for money was unbelievable, even the chef came out to thank us for veining before we left. [...] For a newly opened restaurant it was packed with people equally enjoying the great food with a lovely atmosphere [...]"

"Fantastic unassuming yet authentic Italian restaurant with amazing food at a reasonable price. All the staff were really friendly. We were a table of 4 and shared 4 antipasti, 2 'bakery' pizzas and 2 pastas followed by desserts with a bottle of wine shared with it (~£120 total). Everything was fresh and delicious. Would absolutely recommend."

“Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. The welcome, the service, the recommendations, the knowledge of the food and the quality of the food was just superb.
My grandparents are all from Italy, so we head back very often. It reminds me of the very traditional Italian restaurants in the small villages of Italy but with a sophistication.
Authentic but current.
You can see how much care has been put into this business from the owners. Everything is done with passion.
Will most definitely be back again, soon if not weekly, introducing new friends and family each time!"
